Flying Lesson Eight

  • Plane: Cessna 152 (959GT)
  • Lesson: slow flight, power off stalls, emergencies, forward slips
  • Duration: 2 1/2 hours total

We worked on slow flight, power off stalls, emergencies, forward slips.

Simulate engine failure:

  • Step one: Pitch for glide speed, which is 60 knots.
  • Step two: Look for a good place to land. Preferably into the wind.
  • Step three: Check for cause of engine failure: fuel shut off, primer, mixture, key. Try to start it. If I can’t start it, prepare for emergency landing.

Slow flight: (left to right)

  • Carb heat.
  • Throttle down.
  • One notch of flaps in white arc. Wait…then two notches. Wait…then three notches.

Slow flight question:

  1. We try to maintain level altitude during slow flight, or do we simulate coming in for a landing?

Forward slip:

Full aileron with full rudder in opposite direction.
