Flying Lesson Thirteen

  • Plane: Cessna 152 (959GT)
  • Lesson: pattern work, landings
  • Duration: 2.5 hours

I had two lessons today. One this morning and one this afternoon. This post is for the afternoon lesson.

I’m working on pattern work and landings. The airport was busy this afternoon, so Robert did all the radio work.

We just keep doing landings over and over and over. Little by little I’m getting the hang of it. Sometimes I fly almost the whole pattern and land without much of any input from Robert. I do it mainly by myself. Other times I’m all over the place, I’m too low on base, too much throttle on base to pick up altitude, then too high on final. I think another problem I was having was not turning to base quite quick enough, which made me get to low on base.

We attempted two power off landings this afternoon. If I remember right, the first one was okay and we made the runway. The second one felt sketchy to me. We were too low, Robert was mostly flying, but I was pitching for optimal glide speed. (60) When we were getting close to the runway, but feeling like we were too low, I think I pulled up a little, we got below 60 for a very short while, it felt like a not good situation to me, Robert put the throttle in at that time. The problem with this approach is that I still don’t know exactly who was flying the plane, or who was supposed to be doing what. That makes for a dangerous situation. I’m almost sure my job was just glide speed, but I’m not positive. I need to be 100% positive. It maybe was clear to Robert, but it wasn’t to me. I will make sure in the future if I’m ever unclear about what was going on, I will be very vocal and ask.
